175th Anniversary celebrations
2010-2011 season concerts and engagements
Huddersfield Choral Society was founded in June 1836. To celebrate the 175th anniversary of this great occasion, the Society is planning a series of fundraising and social events and concerts during the 175th season, culminating in a Gala Concert and Gala Ball in June 2011, as near to the original founding date as possible.
Forthcoming fundraising events
Why does the Choral need to do extra fundraising for the celebrations? - there are three main reasons:
- as when we celebrated our 150th anniversary in 1986, we are including extra concerts during the Season, including Stainer's Crucifixion and the gala concert The Dream of Gerontius. We also plan a further recording of Messiah. Concerts and recordings cost money!
- to encourage new singers and supporters we plan a series of six workshops - watch this space for further details.
- our history is closely bound up with that of the local area. We are producing an exhibition which will travel around Kirklees from June 2010. A revised history of And the Glory by our former archivist Bob Edwards will be published and will be available in the summer 2010. At the end of the anniversary season, in the summer 2011, we will also produce a special commemorative brochure to highlight the events of this very special time.
If you can help in any way, by attending one of our enjoyable events, by donating raffle prizes or promises for the Auction on 3 July 2010 or perhaps even by joining some 60 donors already supporting our 175 for 175 appeal, Jenny would love to hear from you!
