25 years a singing member – now Richard Myhill takes on the Treasurer role
A huge congratulations to Richard Myhill who recently received his 25-year badge. Richard has also recently taken on the role of Treasurer for the Society. Being in charge of the purse strings is no mean feat, and we caught up with Richard to see how the job has been going so far:
What is your role on committee/in the society?
I have two roles: Treasurer and I am one of the four Senior Officers.
What is your HCS backstory?
I have just been awarded my 25 Year Badge; I never thought I’d see the day! This is by far the best large chorus in the North, if not nationally! And it’s well worth being a part of – as my 25 years of service shows. My favourite concert was St Matthew Passion by J S Bach, with Northern Sinfonia, Jane Glover conducting, and soloists including Christopher Maltman and Adrian Thompson.
What made you decide to take on the role of Treasurer?
The Choral has given me so much pleasure: taking part in many BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall; tours abroad (to places such as France and even Japan!); concerts in so many prestigious venues (The Barbican, St David’s Cardiff, Usher Edinburgh, York Minster to name a few); professional CD recordings; working with top conductors, orchestras and soloists; radio and TV programmes; and above all, singing with other talented and committed amateur musicians. I have recently retired and I decided it was high time I put something back in, using my business skills and experience gained in banking and as a college lecturer.
What has the role entailed so far?
Helping make sure we maintain and improve further our high musical and artistic standards, built up since we were established in 1836. It is my job, along with the other senior officers and committee members, to ensure we are spending the right amount of money on the right things. Although our objective is not profit maximisation, we must still have more money coming in than going out! I am still ‘new to the role’ and have been very grateful for the help and encouragement of everyone so far.
Final fun fact/favourite piece/piece you’d love to sing with HCS (or hear HCS sing)/anything else you might want to include.
My all time favourite piece is the Mass in B Minor by J S Bach. I have sung this piece many times and I would love to sing this again with the ‘wall of sound’ of the Choral! It would be thrilling!
