Happy Birthday, Mozart!
It was Mozart’s birthday yesterday and we’re thrilled to be taking on his Requiem in D minor in March at the final concert of our 23/24 Season.
This was his last work and was unfinished on his death in 1791. It was completed the following year by Franz Sussmayr, who may have been working from notes or scraps left by the composer. Its power and beauty, which make it such an audience favourite, have also given rise to various legends around its composition; that it was commissioned by an ‘unknown, grey stranger’ and that Mozart was convinced that he was composing his own funeral mass.
Ellie Slorach’s fresh, lively interpretation won immediate praise from the choir, and in this concert she has programmed a fascinating selection of music from the 12th to 21st centuries to stand alongside Mozart’s Requiem.
Happy birthday, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart!
