Join the HCS Family – it could change your life for the better!
That’s what our singing members who have joined us in the last year think. We have welcomed new singers to our parent choir (18 and above, after audition); our sister choir HCS Voices (18 and above, no audition); and our three Youth Choirs (ages ranging from 7 to 21, no audition). You might be filling in an application form too when you’ve read what they have to say!
Meet 10-year-old Tara Shackcloth who joined Young Voices last year:

Why did you choose to join Young Voices?
I saw a flyer about the choir which interested me so I attended a rehearsal. I liked it so much I begged my mum to let me attend every week.
What do you enjoy most about rehearsals?
I have enjoyed meeting new people. Wednesday (rehearsal night) is now my favourite night of the week.
Which has been your favourite concert? Why?
The Queen’s Jubilee Concert in Holmfirth had a great atmosphere and we ate McDonald’s afterwards! (Other burger restaurants are available…)
What 3 words best describe your experience of the choir so far?
Fun. Exhilarating. Diverse.
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of joining?
Don’t be afraid to join. Everyone is welcomed and is helped to improve. We support and encourage each other.
Whetted your appetite? Too old to join Young Voices? Read what Yinyong Zhang has to say about joining HCS in May 2022:

Why did you choose to join HCS?
HCS was recommended to me by someone in another choir. I then researched on-line and decided to audition.
What do you enjoy most about rehearsals?
I really like the conductors. Greg is active and dynamic and Ellie has a great personality and is able to find different approaches to get the best out of people.
Which has been your favourite concert? Why?
I really liked the I Saw New Worlds concert; the music was beautiful.
What 3 words best describe your experience of the choir so far?
Enjoyable. Challenging. Varied.
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of joining?
If you want to learn from excellent conductors and sing a range of music with a friendly group of people, come and give it a go!
Over 18, want to sing but don’t fancy an audition? HCS Voices could be for you. Katie Broadbent thinks so and she joined the choir in the pandemic days of singing via Zoom:

Why did you choose to join HCS Voices?
I used to work in Africa so was drawn to the flyer which said African songs formed part of the repertoire. I love singing in different languages and experiencing different cultures – it’s my kind of music.
What do you enjoy most about rehearsals?
There’s a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Abi is really good and easy-going. Singing is good for the soul and takes your mind off any day-to-day problems. I like the way it makes you feel; the sound is amazing, even after just half an hour’s rehearsal and it makes you want to move your body. I look forward to every Wednesday evening.
Which has been your favourite concert? Why?
The most recent concert, the Huddersfield Choral Society Season Launch. I like the Town Hall as a venue as it takes me back to my school days when I used to play there in the school orchestra. Most of all I liked the fact that all 3 choirs belonging to the choral family were singing in the same concert.
What 3 words best describe your experience of the choir so far?
Joyous. Interesting. Varied.
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of joining?
Go along and try. It’s so friendly, there’s no need to be nervous.
Thank you to all the singing members who have been involved in answering our questions so far…and keep your eyes peeled for more!
