Mayor Brabin Plans for Kirklees Year of Music 2023

West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin and local Civic leaders led a “Pre-launch” event for the 2023 Year of Music at the refurbished Lawrence Batley Theatre on September 22nd.

As part of the Yorkshire region’s plans for a Year of Culture in 2023, Kirklees Council has declared it as a Year of Music for the district, and has appointed a multi-disciplinary team to take forward programming for the year.

There is a new website at www.musicinkirklees.co.uk with some further information.

The Year of Music says that “2023 will celebrate the richness and diversity of our music heritage, the music created and performed today, and our ambition for the future, inclusive of all genres, all communities and in all forms.”

The Artistic Programmer William Galinsky, who leads the project, wants it to bring increased access to music for all communities, showcase how central our musical cultures are to the life of the Borough, and leave a lasting legacy after the year is over. He has been meeting a wide spectrum of people in Kirklees’ music community, including an exploratory discussion with the Society.
