Choral Notes

Mrs Sunderland Success for HCS Youth Choirs

The evening of Friday February 23rd saw our Youth Choirs triumph in the Mrs Sunderland Festival competition. Dr Andrew Padmore, the very experienced adjudicator, described the choir as ‘ truly outstanding’ – a real accolade when he also considered the competition to exhibit the highest quality of musicianship, unrivalled elsewhere.

The results were as follows:-

Class 85: Young People’s Choir – school year 9 and under: FIRST PLACE

Class 87: Young People’s Choir – school year 11 and under: FIRST PLACE

Class 88: Young People’s Choir – 21 years and under: FIRST PLACE

This doesn’t tell the whole story. HCSYC entered two choirs in Class 88 (the chamber choir Vocalise and one comprising all singers) and achieved 1st and 2nd places, with both choirs deemed ‘outstanding.’

And there’s more! The choir also won the Arthur Rooke trophy for the most memorable performance of the day. Their rendition of Chilcott’s Lift my Eyes was considered ‘choral artistry at its very best.’

None of this could have happened without the stunning musicianship and dedication of Alison North MBE (musical director) and Jane Robertson (accompanist).

Disappointed you missed it? Come to their spring concert on Sunday March 3rd, 3pm at Lindley Methodist Church and find out the secret of their success. Tickets (£10 and £5 for those in education) can be purchased on the door or on-line at

See you there!
