One of the great choral masses, Mozart’s Requiem in D minor was his last work and was unfinished on his death in 1791. It was completed the following year by Franz Sussmayr, who may have been working from notes or scraps left by the composer.

Its power and beauty, which make it such an audience favourite, have also given rise to various legends around its composition; that it was commissioned by an ‘unknown, grey stranger’ and that Mozart was convinced that he was composing his own funeral mass.
