Our Heritage

Founded in 1836, the Huddersfield Choral Society is one of the oldest established large choirs in the world and has won an international reputation well beyond its West Yorkshire roots.

Its repertoire embraces all the large scale classic works as witnessed by its long history of broadcasts and recordings (including several gold discs) and it has become most closely associated in the public mind with Handel’s oratorio Messiah which has become an indispensable part of the Christmas season.

Our Heritage
Roderick Williams OBE
Huddersfield Choral has deep roots, going back nearly 200 years, and has won an international reputation while remaining firmly set in its native soil. As a freelance, itinerant musician, it is sometimes possible to feel a little rudderless, without a base or home. We singers hope to make friends wherever we go but this can become quite random and amorphous. You have that sense of tradition and belonging in abundance. It gives me great pleasure to be able to put down some semblance of roots in my association with the Huddersfield Choral, to strengthen a friendly relationship borne out of a shared love of music-making and to feel to be a part of your wonderful community.
