Coming up – Bach’s St John Passion

Huddersfield Choral Society is looking forward to welcoming you to Bach St John Passion, the final concert in the 2021–22 season, on Saturday, 2nd April 2022.

Smaller and more intimate than the St Matthew Passion the St John is considerably more dramatic, including Gospel narrative, crowd scenes sung by the chorus, reflective arias and many beautiful and richly harmonised chorales, again sung by the chorus.

The central figure is the Evangelist, sung at our concert by tenor Andrew Staples. There are also roles for Jesus – sung by baritone Dan D’Souza – Pilate, Peter and other characters. Our other soloists are soprano Francesca Chiejina, mezzo-soprano Bethany Horak-Hallett and bass Trevor Eliot Bowes. All the soloists, excepting Andrew Staples, are singing with the Choral Society for the first time.

This is the first performance of this work by the Choral Society at Huddersfield Town Hall and we are delighted to be joining forces with Manchester Camerata for the evening. Hailed by The Times as ‘Britain’s most exciting orchestra’, Manchester Camerata is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary this year.

The concert is conducted by our inspirational Choral Director, Gregory Batsleer, who has recently been appointed Festival Director to the London Handel Festival.

The performance will be sponsored by Investec Wealth & Investment to whom we are very grateful for their continuing support.
