Gerontius: Reviews Round-up

Our new recording of Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius, featuring the Orchestra of Opera North, David Butt Philip, Karen Cargill, Roland Wood and the RNCM Chamber Choir, all under the baton of Martyn Brabbins, has so far made it to number 2 on the charts and has received several favourable reviews.

Norman Lebrecht, writing for The Critic, gives it four stars and calls it ‘a cherishable dream’. In Gramophone, Jeremy Dibble notes the ‘litheness, precision of diction and excellent intonation’ of HCS and calls the recording ‘a real treat’. For The Classic Review, David A McConnell stated that the new release ‘has much to offer, especially the robust singing of the Huddersfield choir’. And finally, John Quinn writes on Presto that the recording is a ‘notable contribution to the work’s discography’, and comments that ‘the 2025 vintage of the HCS does the Elgar tradition of ‘The Choral’ proud.’
